Washed Out

I have taunted the gods and they have responded in kind by flooding our garden plot and destroying the veggie dreams of many other plotters. I am humbled by the raw power of water and I hope to appease the gods in the coming days with many goodwill offerings and chants to the heavens. For now we will wait for the water to recede and reveal the real damage done to our plot. We are forever at the mercy of the rain, sun and wind.

More Rain

It's a balmy 56 degrees and thunderstorms are likely! It has already precipitated heavily directly over our garden. Damn you Thor, throw your thunderbolts elsewhere.

Kandi and I frolicked in our garden today, but the soil was a bit wet to plant. We are being thwarted by the rain gods and I am now beginning to feel a kinship with Iowa Farmers. I will stand side by side with my brothers and sisters and raise our collective fists against errant weather patterns. Who needs variety, when we can embrace predictability. Come on weather gods! Our garden is important. We are going to have almost 30 varieties of food and right now the gods are raining on our garden parade. Look, after we plant our garden you can rain on it quite frequently.

Rain and It Is Getting Late

The rain has thwarted our plan to plant today. Please great spirit, I want rain after the garden has been established. We are on the cusp of completing a great dream to plant our plot, but we are edging closer to June and I am feeling that we are starting extremely late. Luckily we have wonderful Iowa soil to nurture our plants.

Deer and Fencing

As we finished erecting our garden fence today, I was awed by the site of deer. Deer majestically bounded by our plot and I realized that our garden fence would not stand up against a deer party . I am asking all deer living around ames to leave my little garden alone. I realize the bounty in late summer could be tempting, but please just bound on by. PS deer: try not to bound in front of my car or my bike, that is against the code we humans and deer have agreed upon. We have eliminated all your natural predators and therefore you have pledged to not eat our small gardens or bound in front of our cars or bikes (gas is so expensive now and most people will be using bicycles much more these days).

Garden Start

Kandice and I have begun our garden project. Earlier in the year we purchased seeds from Seed Savers and we are now prepared to plant. We just finished our fence to protect against an onslaught of rabbits. We secured a plot in Ames, IA at Iowa State University. Our plot is approximately 16x27 and we plan to grow a bounty of wonderful organic food. Currently, we plan to plant a variety of beans, peas, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, tomatillos, chard, spinach, sweet peppers, onions, chives, basil and hot peppers.
